Used Car Recall & Reliability Checker

ChirpAuto checks any used car three ways: safety recalls, common problems and reliability records from NHTSA; real fuel economy from FuelEconomy.gov; and the chirps — what people who own, or used to own, the same car actually say about living with it. Free, no signup.

How the Chirp Score works

Every report starts at 100 and loses points for what federal records show about that exact model year: NHTSA safety recalls, how many owners filed complaints, and how serious those complaints were (crashes, fires, injuries and deaths weigh the most). 75 and up is Clean, 50–74 is Proceed With Caution, under 50 is Avoid. The Chirp Score is hard data only — owner feelings never move it. Those live in the Owner Chirps section, on purpose. If a car scores badly, we automatically rescore similar cars in the same class and show you the ones that do better — same year, same job, cleaner record.

Insurance cost matters as much as the sticker price

A cheap car with expensive insurance isn't cheap. Minivans, Subarus, the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 sit in the cheapest insurance tiers year after year, while muscle cars, big Ram trucks, Teslas and theft-prone 2011–2021 Kia and Hyundai models can cost $1,000+ more per year to insure. Every report includes the car's insurance tier, a national average estimate, and cheaper-to-insure alternatives in the same class.

Records tell half the story. Owners tell the rest.

A car can look clean on paper and still drive its owners up the wall — or look average and be quietly loved for 200,000 miles. That is why every ChirpAuto report also reads the chirps: the sentiment of people who currently own, or previously owned, the same model. We scan their public posts in owner communities, score whether they are praising or complaining, and surface the loudest chirps — anchored by hard signals like the NHTSA complaint trend and the real-world MPG owners actually get, so one loud voice never drowns out the data.

Frequently asked questions

How does the ChirpAuto Chirp Score work?

The 0–100 score starts at 100 and subtracts points for NHTSA recalls, owner complaint volume, and complaint severity (crashes, fires, injuries, deaths reported for that model year). 75+ is Clean, 50–74 is Proceed With Caution, under 50 is Avoid.

Where does the data come from?

Recalls and owner complaints come from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (api.nhtsa.gov and the vPIC catalog). Fuel economy and owner-reported MPG come from the U.S. Department of Energy at FuelEconomy.gov. Owner sentiment (the Owner Chirps section) comes from public posts by people who own or owned the same car — Reddit via the Arctic Shift archive and Bluesky — scored for sentiment and anchored with NHTSA complaint trends and owner-reported MPG.

What are Owner Chirps?

Owner Chirps is ChirpAuto's owner-sentiment read: we collect public posts from people who own, or used to own, the same model, score whether they're praising or complaining, and show you the loudest posts. It's sentiment, not a rating — it never changes the Chirp Score, which is built from federal data only.

Which used cars are cheapest to insure?

Minivans, Subaru models, the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5 are consistently among the cheapest to insure thanks to low claims and theft. Sports cars, Dodge Charger/Challenger, Ram trucks, Teslas and 2011–2021 Kia/Hyundai models without an immobilizer tend to cost the most. Every ChirpAuto report shows the car's insurance tier and cheaper-to-insure alternatives.

What if the car I want scores badly?

ChirpAuto automatically checks similar cars in the same class and model year, rescoring each one live from NHTSA data, and shows you the alternatives that score better.

Can I find this car for sale near me?

Yes. After a report runs, ChirpAuto detects your approximate ZIP code from your IP address and builds one-tap searches — including Facebook Marketplace and Cars.com within 100 miles. Your ZIP is never stored or sent anywhere except the site you tap.

Does a good score mean this specific car is good?

No. The score grades the model year's track record, not the individual car. Always check open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and get a pre-purchase inspection before buying.
